Can You Lose Weight Without Exercise?

Well yes and no.

Yes you will lose weight but more likely it will be water and precious lean muscle tissue than fat.  Even though you will be shrinking in size it will be because of the muscle loss while you still retain the fat you've been so desperately trying to rid yourself of. Without exercise you won't get the attractive, toned body shape you've always wanted.

Because your body has done such a marvellous job of storing excess energy in the form of fat the only way to reverse the process is to burn it.  This is the only way to get rid of the love handles.

When you exercise your lean muscle tissue grabs surrounding fat stores and burns them as energy.
 The more fat it burns the more your attractive muscles are brought to the surface.  The more lean muscle tissue you have the more fat you burn.

I know that most people conjure thoughts of sweating and torturing themselves like crazy to lose weight which just isn't true.  You can do something as simple as walking to drop pounds, anything that gets your heart rate rising and exercises your large muscle groups as well as your heart will shed pounds.  Exercising at least 3 times or more per week will drop the weight even faster.

Fat Free - Is There Any Such Thing?

If it sounds too good to be true it more than often probably is and this also applies to fat free and sugar free foods.

As the saying goes there is no such thing as a free lunch and although the though of being able to eat as much as you want of your favorites foods and there be no consequence is appealing there is always some kind of trade off.  Although you may not be eating the usual fat in a serving of your favorite potato chips, man made alternatives are not without their share of side effects.

In the mid 90's with the rise of obesity being greater than at any other point in time it was decided that a harmless chemical named Olestra which was discovered by mistake 40 years prior by Proctor and Gamble would be put into foods as a substitute for the fatty taste.  Olestra was supposed to lower cholestrerol by up to 15% however the FDA has not found significant scientific proof to verify this claim.  It was then to be used as a fat free alternative to oil and was used in place of vegetable oils for certain brands of potato chips. 

Why were they so popular?  The thought of not having to sacrifice the foods you love and not gain weight was appealing.  The reason why snacks high in fat are always popular comes purely down to taste because fat molecules carry flavor.  Olestra was able to maintain the flavor that consumers loved without the high calories that came with the usual potato chip. 

Sounds great doesn't it?  However Olestra is not without its share of side effects if consumed in quantity.  The body is unable to digest and breakdown the Olestra which passes through the body untouched.  If consumed in larger quantities which is easy to do if you love potato chips and as most people do when they think its fat free, the side effects is anal leakage.  Not a nice thing to experience if you're out on the town with your friends.

Fat free foods have high appeal because people like to think that they can eat as much of their favorite foods as possible without consequence, unfortunately there's no such thing.  With the rise of fat free alternatives consumers are encouraged to eat more from the foods at the top of the pyramid.  There is the illusion you can eat whatever you want. 

Olestra has only been added to foods for the past 24 years.  The FDA still don't know what the longterm effects might be.  If the Olestra molecule passes through the body without being absorbed it might impact on how your other food is being digested, it is a concern that consumers may not receiving all of their nutrients from their regular food as Olestra may block proper absorption.

The bottom line here is that there is no quick fix.  Avoid additives that came of out of a laboratory and you will be on your way to a leaner, healthier body.  This is applies to artificial sweeteners too such as Sorbitol which is contained in chewing gum, pancake syrups, jellies, jams, sugars etc. of which side effects when consuming in excess of 20 grams per day can cause severe diarrhea and aggravate Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Individuals have been hospitlized from consuming 30 grams of Sorbitol based products per day on a regualar basis.  Your cells produce Sorbitol naturally but an excess can lead to cell damage. 

Bottom line, if you are going to consume foods with artifical additives, moderation is always the key however there is no substitute for the best foods which are straight out of natures garden, foods that can readily be absorbed that are nutrient rich and are beneficial to your health and wellbeing.

Why Your Body Fights To Keep You Fat

Don't get discouraged.  Against its better judgment your body is actually trying to protect you.  Think of it as an evolutionary mechanism formed back when times were a lot tougher than they are now.

Located within your brain is your hypothalamus.  This is your weight regulating mechanism, it keeps your weight at a certain level known as your setpoint.  Think of your setpoint as a your bodys natural weight thermostat.  Whatever weight you currently are at your setpoint maintains.

If you weigh 200 pounds then that is what your setpoint is programed to.

You start on a calorie restrictive diet, you eat much less and infrequently and you lose the weight.

At first the weight is dropping off like crazy, the needle on the weigh scale has shifted 4 pounds and it has only been your first week.  You are feeling tired and lethargic but the results are keeping you motivated.

Second week and this time you lose only one pound.  You are feeling a little disappointed despite sticking to your diet faithfully.

Third week and this time the needle on the weigh scale doesn't even budge.  Now you're feeling that the diet isn't working, coupled with that you are also feeling tired, hungry, lethargic, irritable and frustrated.

Need To Gain Some Weight? - Why Not Try A Fad Diet?

I know that title seems a little provocative but it's absolutely true!

Unless you're Victoria Beckham you simply can't sustain a fad diet for the long term.

What do I mean by "fad diet"?

They are easy to spot as they tend to fall into 1 or more categories in a list of 10 with one of them being that in order to lose weight you need to eliminate one or more food groups from your diet.

Diets like these are of the low carbohydrate variety.  It relies on the priniciples of fat burning physiology.  Eliminating carbohydrates such as cereals and grains and certain fruits and vegetables burns fat fast. 

How your body functions under normal conditions is that it uses carbohydrates from your daily diet to burn as energy.  This helps sustain you and give you all the energy you need for the purpose of living.  Before your body can burn fat it first burns the carbohydrates as sugar because carbohydrates in your system are converted to both complex and simple sugars.  After the available carbohydrates have been burned then the body turns to your fat stores.  Diets low in carbohydrates reduce the need to burn carbs off as sugars and instead goes straight to the process of burning fat.  Sounds great and physiology of how the body works has proven this is the case however there are drawbacks.

Most people simply can't stick to diets like this.  It is too restrictive.  Dieters who cut out carbohydrates experience irritability, constipation, bad breath, boredom from lack of variety, nutrient deficiency, get tired of eating so much protein. 
Diets high in animals fats are also linked with certain types of cancers.  Scientists note that low carb diets work temporarily but they still don't know what longterm effects a diet like this will have on health.

The brain needs a certain amount of carbohydrates daily for proper function.  Carbohyrdates such as whole grains and cereals are responsible for the proper cleaning of the intestines and bowels not to mention the nutrients and energy that we gain from fruits and vegetable which also add bulk to our food. 

The best kind of diet is no diet at all.  You need all food groups in their correct proportions for overall health and wellbeing.

Low carbohydrate diets may work for the short term, but being too restrictive our body's old habits come flooding back and we binge and gain back all the weight plus lots more.  This is why gimmicky diets don't work and only end up making us fatter.

If we can lose the weight sensibly without the need for dieting and without deprivation and extreme calorie restriction, not only will the weight come off but come off for good.

Abdominal Fat Is No Joke!

Doughy stomachs and beer bellies are indicators of heart disease, so if you have an excess of this type of fat you have to lose it.  

Those who lost just 30 pounds greatly reduced their risk of pre-diabetes, the precursor to flown blown Type II diabetes.  Pre-diabetes happens when there is an excess of fat on the body and insulin effectiveness is reduced (a condition known as insulin resistance).  Excess sugar remains in the blood elevating sugar levels and affecting the normal function of the body. 

When you have too much sugar in the blood, the blood as a result begins to thicken or become viscous.  When that happens then the risk of blood clots greatly increases resulting in heart attack and stroke.

Abdominal fat is the most active fat on the body compared with the hips and buttocks and does not behave the same way.  This is because abdominal fat is "visceral" fat.  This is the type of fat that is interlaced throughout your vital organs such as your liver, intestines, pancreas, and gallbladder.

Remember how I mentioned that it was the most active fat on the body?  It is responsible for releasing inflammatory molecules into your body and can interfere with your body’s natural chemical reactions.  

It is important that you lose weight for this reason.  Put your health first and you will get the attractive, slim, strong body in the process, a nice bonus.  

How Do You Get Rid Of Abdominal Fat?  

If you were like me and most people out there you would have tried every diet under the sun.  They are all based upon outrageous claims; you try to stick it out because you want to avoid the pain of failing again so you hold on for as long as you can.  Yet again, another diet only ends up in failure, frustration and feeling jaded.

Why?  Well, simply put diets don't work. 

Diet implies a temporary solution to a problem that has been years in the making but every diet must come to an end.  This is when you find yourself struggling with real world eating and the weight plus more piles back on.  Your diet may be so calorie restrictive that your body forces you to eat to gain back the pounds making you fatter than before; this is known as Yo-Yo dieting.

Unless you're a Biggest Loser contestant you shouldn't be aiming for this.  A nice 1 to 2 pound per week weight loss is perfect.  Remember that slow wins the race, those little losses end up being huge ones over time, so resist the temptation to lose the 10 pounds per week.  You didn't gain 100 pounds over night so it reasons to stand that it won't come off overnight either.  But I promise it will come off at a faster rate than it went on.  

You have to find what is going to work for you this time and that is to work in harmony with your body, not torture it with starvation or weird food combinations.
